FAQ

BURNERS & FUEL

1. Which burner should I choose?
The spirit burner is recommended for use in everyday situations, such as short trips (a couple of days), especially during summer time when high power is not required. The gas burner is appropriate for similar situations, except that it cannot be used when the temperature is below -10 degrees Celsius. The multi-fuel burner is recommended for more extreme situations, such as longer expeditions (a comparatively small amount of fuel is required) or when higher power is needed at very low temperatures. For more information, see the answer to the question below.

2. What are the pros and cons of Trangia's spirit burner, gas burner and multi-fuel burner?
The spirit burner:
+ It is easy to use, due to the simple construction.
+ The burner works even at severe cold (below -10 degrees Celsius) if used together with the winter attachment.
+ The fuel is rather cheap.

- It takes longer to reach the boiling point (compared to when using a gas burner), partly due to lower power.
- The spirit burner produces more soot than the gas burner.

The gas burner:
+ It takes a shorter time to reach the boiling point, due to the higher power.
+ It is easy to use. It produces no soot.
+ It is easy to adjust the power during use.

- It does not work at a temperature below -10 degrees Celsius.
- The fuel is more expensive than for the spirit burner.
- It is more difficult to determine when you are running out of fuel in the container.

The multi-fuel burner:
+ It has a high power, even at very low temperatures. It takes short time to reach the boiling point
+ It works with several different fuels. X2 works with kerosene, white gas and cartridge gas.

- It is slightly more complicated to use than the other burners, because pre-heating is required.
- The multi-fuel burner is more expensive than the spirit burner and the gas burner.

3. What fuels can I use in the different burners?
Here you can find a list of fuel names in different countries:
Fuel list
Unfortunately we dont have any information on where to purchase over the world.

4. What type of gas cartridge can I use to Trangia´s Gasburner & if I use gas to X2?

These burners should be use with Primus gas cartridges 2202,2206,2207. Or gas cartridge of other brands with propane/butan mix with the threaded valve according to standard EN512. (example on other brands: MSR,Optimus,Markill, Coleman)
Unfortunately, it is not possible to use gas cartridges that can be refilled to the Trangia gas burner.

5. Can the spirits burner ,gas burner or fuel bottle be transported by aircraft?
According to the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration, the spirit burner and fuel bottle are not considered as dangerous goods, provided that they are empty or filled with water. However, it is advisable to check-in the equipment and not carry it as hand luggage. Always check with your airline before traveling what rules they have!!

6. How to clean a spirit burner when food has being spilt over it such that the holes are partly clogged?
Use steel wire, a thick needle or something similar and try to clean the holes. Steel wool can be used to clean the burner. Try not to get food into the wick. After cleaning the burner, let it dry properly before use. It is advisable to test the burner after it has dried before it is used in the stove again, to make sure it works properly.

7. In which Trangia items can I use Trangia´s Gas burner & Multifuel burner?

You can use the Gas burner to: 27 & 25 serie, The Triangle and Open Spirit Stove (artno: 100230). You can use the Multifuel burner to 27 & 25 serie stoves. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use these burners in the Mini Trangia, there´s no room for it.

8. If there is some residual alcohol in the spirit burner after cooking, can the alcohol be saved in the burner (with the lid closed) for the next day?
The fuel can be stored inside the burner for the next day (or the next couple of days), provided that the lid is properly closed and the o-ring is undamaged. However, it is essential that the burner has cooled down completely before the lid is closed. Please note that the alcohol must not be stored in the burner for a longer period of time. The burner should not be packed down in the stove set during transport with fuel in the burner, it can leak!

9. I have a Trangia gas burner through which the gas is flowing at a dramatically reduced rate. How can I solve this problem?
The problem is most likely caused by some dirt in the jet nipple. Loosen up the appliance as shown in fig. 3 in the instructions (both the jet nipple and the burner). Clean out the jet nipple by blowing through the tiny hole at the front. Directions for use

10. I have an old Trangia set. How can I adapt the set in order to be able to use the gas burner?
The easiest way to adapt an older set to the gas burner is to cut out a bigger hole among the small holes on the side of the lower windshield that is four holes wide and four holes high.

11. At what temperatures does the spirit burner and gas burner work?
The spirit burner works at virtually all temperatures. However, the power of the spirit burner is decreasing with the decrease in temperature. To avoid that the power decreases at low temperatures (below 0 degrees Celsius), it is advisable to use the pre-heater (article no. 602101: Pre-heater to spirit burner). The Gas burner works well down to -10 degrees.

12. How long does it take to boil water on the Trangia stove with the different burners?
It varies due to several different factors, such as weather, wind and fuel quality. We tested indoors, around 20 degrees.
Burner               0,5 l         1,0 l
Spirit4,5 min    8 min
Gas burner2,5 min3,5 min
X2, gas    -4 min
X2, white gas          -4,5 min

13. How much fuel do I need to bring on a tour?

It depends on what type of food you´re cooking, how cold it is, how windy and also what type of burner and quality of fuel you use. Here are some guidelines:
- Spiritburner takes 1dl and will burn approx 25min. Generally allow 0,5l spirits for cooking per person, per week in summertime.
- Gas burner...It burns 150g gas/hr with full effect. A canister with 230g will go for 1,5hr on full speed. Boiling water indoors around 20', takes 9g per litre water

Always test your burner before you go and bring some spare fuel!

1. I have lost my "directions for use", can I find it on your website?

Sure, follow this link :
Directions for use

2. My pots or windshield has melted, how could this happen?

If you "dry cook", ie put a pot over the flame without food, liquid or fat, it soon becomes too hot and can cause the pot to melt. The vents in the lower windshield should be turned into the wind. If it is wrong or if the wind suddenly turns you can get a back flow that causes the melting of the air holes. Spilt fuel on the ground and the windshield can also cause damage. If you have spilt fuel you need to remove the stove and wipe it dry. See also question below.

3. Can the various Trangia pots & kettles be used over an open fire?

Yes, all pots can be used over an open fire. Keep in mind that some products have plastic parts that can melt. Be careful not to overheat empty (dry cook) pots - they can melt!

4. Could Trangia multi-disc be used as a lid when cooking?
Trangia multi-disc cannot be used as a lid when cooking (the multi-disc would be heated to such a high temperature that it will deform). However, it works perfectly well to use the multi-disc as a lid to keep food warm (whilst off the stove), while the other food is cooked.

5. What are the dimensions of the various Trangia pots, fry pans & kettles?
Here you can find a list with weights and measures: Weight & measures table

6. How should I clean my Trangia stove, can I use the dishwasher?

No, you should not put your Trangia items in the dishwasher. The detergent is too strong and will cause ugly spots on the aluminium. Hand wash is recommended! If you need something extra you can use soap impregnated steel wool or Schotchbrite (not on nonstick which have a more sensitive surface).

7. I have a brownish or black coating inside my aluminium pots that does not go away. I have only boiled water in them, what is this?
Water contains salts and metals that react with the aluminium and can cause discolouration to the brown, yellow or black side. It is very difficult to wash/scrub of but you can still use your pots safely.

Some general tips !

- Save the yellow bag to store the burner in, it protects the pot/kettle from corrosion.
- Save the thin plastic circle to your nonstick fry pan to protect the surface.
- Use only plastic or wood utensils in your non-stick pots.
- Don’t leave or store food in your pots after you finish cooking. Wash them up and wipe dry before you pack your stove together. Moisture and food residues can cause corrosion and the pots can get ugly.
- Going on a longer tour? Test your equipment before you go to avoid unpleasant surprises. Is everything complete? Is there fuel where you're going? Do you need to bring spare parts? And above all ... can you manage your burner?
